Episode 28: Food and Beer Pairing, Part I PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 22 July 2007
This is part one of a two part series on pairing beer with food.  Beer and food go great together, and we're going to show you how!  This week, we start by taking the two most cliche' beer and food pairs - chicken wings and pizza - and we pair them with great beers that work much better than the standard crappy light lager pairing that most people think of.  In addition, we give you many tips on pairing, suggestions on how to get the best out of the matches and more!  Make sure to stay tuned for the next installment of this series in two weeks, when we take on a full four course meal and pair each course with a different beer.  You don't want to miss it!

Sampled this episode: Paulaner Premium Pils, Boulder Beer Hazed and Infused, Rogue American Amber, and Highland Kashmir IPA.

Episode 26: Hefeweizen PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 07 July 2007

This week, we take a close look at the Hefeweizen style, a german wheat beer that is unfiltered and thus full of yeast.  In German, "hefe" means yeast, and "weizen" means wheat, so this is literally a yeast wheat beer!  Although this style is rooted in German tradition, we take a look at some American interpretations of the style this week.

In terms of taste, these beers often have a nice phenolic characteristic with banana, clove and orange flavors standing out from time to time.  Obviously, the wheat used in these beers also lends a certain flavor profile as well. This style makes a great summer beer with a light body, spritzy carbonation and a low alcohol content.

Sampled this episode: Harpoon UFO (Unfiltered Offering), Flying Dog In Heat Wheat and Blackstone Brewery Hefeweizen

Episode 25: Homebrewing PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 01 July 2007

We're not a homebrewing podcast (there are plently of great ones out there), but we wanted to at least talk about hombrewing at least once.  So - here it is!  We talk all about the process, what it takes to get started, things to watch out for, and more.  This week we welcome a special guest, Tom Meier from the Antioch Sud Suckers , to give us some great expert advice surrounding homebrewing.

In addition to all this, we taste six (that's right, six!) homebrew samples, with several of them sent in from Davis On Draft listeners.   If you've ever wanted to make your own great beer, don't miss this episode!

Sampled this episode: Homebrewed: Belgian Tripel, Cream Ale, IPA, Roggenbier, Dopplebock and Baltic Porter.

Episode 24: Brewery Spotlight - Bell's Brewery PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 24 June 2007

We've been waiting on this one for awhile.  Since we first mentioned Bell's beer back in April/May, we've been flooded with comments about their offerings.  Finally, after much waiting, we get to sample their beers this week.  This Michigan based brewery consistently turns out incredible beer in a wide range of styles that are both seasonal and year round, depending on the style.  This week, we try three of their beers and a homebrewed clone of one of them!  If you love Bell's (and you should!), you don't want to miss this one!

Also, as usual, your emails and beer news from around the world are both discussed.

Sampled this episode:  Bell's Porter, Bell's Expedition Stout, and Bell's Hopslam (including a homebrewed clone!)
